What Is AI Metadata — and What This Tool Strips

AI metadata is information stored with an image about its generation, editing, or provenance. There is no single universal AI tag. This AI metadata remover strips supported metadata containers, including ordinary photo records in those containers.

C2PA

Content Credentials can describe capture, generation, and edits. The cleaner removes embedded provenance blocks from supported images. It does not erase cloud copies or authenticate the credential’s signature.

XMP

XMP can store software names, editing history, descriptions, and provenance-related fields. The container is removed as a whole, including non-AI information.

EXIF

Camera settings, timestamps, GPS, and orientation can live in EXIF. Cleaning removes these records; photos requiring rotation correction are normalized to PNG.

PNG text chunks

PNG text chunks can contain prompts, parameters, software names, or comments. Cleaning strips text containers such as tEXt, zTXt, and iTXt without interpreting each field as proof of AI use.

IPTC

IPTC can carry captions, keywords, creator names, and copyright notices. Keep a master file if you need those details: this cleaner does not selectively preserve attribution fields.

How to Remove AI Metadata from Photos — 3 Steps

1. Choose the final exported photo in the tool above. Inspection and cleaning run locally in your browser.

2. Select Remove metadata. Review the removed containers and any notice about orientation correction or AVIF conversion.

3. Download the cleaned copy, reopen it in the metadata viewer if you want to verify the result, and keep your original separately. Re-editing or exporting again can add new metadata.

AI Metadata Cleaner vs Remover — Same Job, Two Searches

An AI metadata cleaner and an AI metadata remover describe the same job here: stripping supported embedded records from a photo. Both terms lead to the same browser tool and the same downloaded result.

“Cleaner” does not mean a stronger AI detector or a pixel-watermark remover. It also does not mean only AI-related fields disappear. Ordinary EXIF, captions, and attribution inside the removed containers are cleaned too.

Which AI Tools Write AI Metadata

Metadata varies with the product version, export format, and apps a file passes through. Inspect the actual download rather than assuming every image from the same generator carries identical records.

Midjourney

Check the original downloaded image and your final edited export separately. Do not assume every Midjourney file contains an embedded prompt or C2PA record; the viewer reports only what is present in your copy.

DALL·E

OpenAI documents Content Credentials in supported generated-image workflows. For a DALL·E export, inspect the file you have: conversions and later apps can remove or replace embedded records.

Adobe Firefly

Adobe documents automatic Content Credentials for fully Firefly-generated assets. These can identify the software and generation process. Removing a local embedded block does not remove a credential stored elsewhere.

Stable Diffusion

The exporting interface matters. AUTOMATIC1111 can save generation parameters in PNG text and JPEG EXIF. Removing these fields also removes information you might need to reproduce an image.

Photoshop generative fill

A photograph with a generated region is still an edited photograph with AI involvement. Check the export for Content Credentials and editing records; the cleaner cannot reverse the fill or restore the original region.

Canva

Inspect your final Canva download, especially when the design combines imported assets and AI features. This tool does not assume every Canva export contains an AI flag; it removes supported containers when they are present.

Remove Metadata from Photo: EXIF, GPS, Copyright

You can use this tool to remove metadata from a photo even when no AI editor was involved. As an EXIF remover, it clears camera details and embedded GPS. It also removes XMP and IPTC containers that can hold names, captions, and copyright notices.

Save the original for your archive. Cleaning a copyright field does not change ownership or grant permission to reuse someone else’s image. This tool does not hide a location visible in the scene, remove text drawn into the pixels, or erase records on another service.

Check First, Then Clean

Open the image metadata viewer to inspect detected containers and readable fields before cleaning. Export a JSON report if you want a record of what your original contained.

After cleaning, open the downloaded copy in the viewer and compare the results. Inspection is read-only. An empty report does not certify human authorship, detect pixel watermarks, or prove that every platform will treat the image the same way. AVIF container inspection is limited.

Does Cleaning Change the Image?

For ordinary JPG, PNG, and WebP inputs, the tool removes metadata containers while retaining the compressed image data. Color profiles are kept by default; disabling that option can affect how the image appears.

There are exceptions: EXIF orientation correction decodes the image and exports an upright PNG, and AVIF also converts to PNG. AVIF HDR and colors can change during browser conversion. Review the result notice and preview instead of assuming every file follows a lossless metadata-only path.

Limits: Metadata vs Pixel-Level Watermarks

Metadata is stored in file records; a pixel-level watermark is embedded in the picture itself. This tool cannot remove SynthID pixel watermarks, visible logos, or text baked into the image. It is not a pixel-level AI detector.

It also cannot erase external provenance records or change labels on published social posts. A clean metadata report does not guarantee that Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok will leave an upload unlabeled.

FAQ

What is the difference between AI metadata and an AI label?

Metadata is embedded in a file. An AI label is a notice a platform displays. This tool removes supported embedded records from a local copy; it cannot directly control platform labels.

Is an AI metadata cleaner different from an AI metadata remover?

They describe the same function here. Both remove supported metadata containers, including ordinary photo records stored alongside AI-related information.

How do I remove AI metadata from a photo?

Choose the final image, select Remove metadata, and download the result. Keep your original and inspect the downloaded copy in the metadata viewer if you want to compare its records.

Can I remove metadata from a photo without recompressing it?

Yes for ordinary JPG, PNG, and WebP images. Inputs needing EXIF orientation correction and AVIF images use a PNG conversion instead. The result panel identifies those conversions.

Does the EXIF remover delete GPS coordinates?

It removes EXIF and XMP containers, including embedded GPS fields in them. It cannot hide a location visible in the image, written in a filename, or already stored by another service.

Will it remove copyright and creator information?

Yes, when those fields are inside removed metadata containers such as IPTC, XMP, or EXIF. Keep a master copy for attribution. Removing a field does not change ownership or usage rights.

Can it remove SynthID or a visible watermark?

No. SynthID is a pixel-level signal and visible watermarks are image content. Neither is removed by this metadata cleaner.

Can I prove a photo is not AI-generated after cleaning?

No. Missing metadata is not evidence of human authorship. The viewer reports file records and does not authenticate C2PA signatures or classify image pixels.

Which image formats and batch sizes are supported?

Choose JPG, PNG, WebP, or browser-decodable AVIF. You can process up to 30 images, 20 MB each and 150 MB per batch. Images over 50 megapixels are rejected. Video, GIF, SVG, and RAW inputs are not supported; export HEIC to JPEG first.

Is this free, and are my photos uploaded?

The tool is free and runs locally in your browser, with no account required. Your images and metadata are not sent to our servers. Download the results before closing or refreshing the page.
